56. Warren E. Sprague was born on 30 July 1924 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA.10 Delivered by Dr. Isaac B. Gage. He was educated in 1942 in Cony High School, Augusta. He served in the military in 1943 in World War II, US Navy. Warren died on 26 January 2009 at the age of 84 in Scarboro, Cumberland County, Maine, USA. SCARBOROUGH -- Warren E. Sprague, 84, of Portland died Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at the Maine Veterans Home after a long illness. He was the husband of Elizabeth A. (Whitney) Sprague. Warren was born on Swan's Island, on July 30, 1924, the son of the late Alfred and Lida (Smith) Sprague. He was raised on the Island and graduated from Cony High School in Augusta as a member of the class of 1942. I n April of 1943 Warren joined the U.S. Navy to fight in WWII. He participated in the D-Day Invasion and served in both the European and Pacific Theatres. After an honorable discharge in February of 1946, Warren returned home and married his wife Elizabeth on April 22, 1950. He and his family moved from Augusta to Portland in 1960 and have been a resident of Portland ever since. Warren spent 29 years at Standard Brands, Inc. selling products such as Planters nuts, Fleischman's margarine, Chase and Sanborn Coffee and Royal desserts. He started as a salesperson and worked his way up to retail supervisor and finally became district sales manager. He then spent eight years as a retail supervisor for Merkert Enterprises in Canton, Mass. Warren and Betty have been members of the Woodford's Congregational Church since 1960. He was also a member of the Woodford's Club, where he enjoyed card games and the camaraderie. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Augusta. He enjoyed playing golf and fishing, watching the Red Sox and watching his children and grandchildren playing sports. He especially enjoyed following Maine High School basketball and spending time at his vacation home on Swan's Island. Most of all he enjoyed the simple things in life: a good cup of coffee, the morning paper and the knowledge that his family and friends were healthy and well cared for. Besides his wife of 59 years Warren is survived by his step-son Daniel Sherwood and his wife Carol of Rangeley, his son Stuart Sprague and his wife Emmi of Duxbury, Mass., his son Nathan Sprague and his wife Lisa of Portland; as well as his six grandchildren, Rebecca Doughty, Joel Sherwood, Garrett Sprague, Seth Sprague, Cameron Sprague and Calvin Sprague; and four great- grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Eugene Norwood. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, from 12 - 2 p.m. at the Woodford's Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland with a funeral service at 2 p.m. at the church with Rev. Annette Mott officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at a later date at the Veterans Cemetery in Augusta.
