Paul â€œRustyâ€ Lester Crossman, 61, died Oct. 6, 2005, in Southwest Harbor after a brief but strenuous battle with lung cancer. Born in Ellsworth, April 6, 1944, Mr. Crossman was the son of Lillian (Davis) Lunt and the late Raymond Crossman.
Rusty spent his childhood on Frenchboro, Long Island, until joining the Air Force in 1965. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sargent E5 in 1968, then returned to his childhood home to pursue a career as a fisherman. In 1993, Rusty moved to the nearby island of Swan's where he continued to fish. While on Swan's Island, Mr. Crossman was involved in many clubs and organizations: Hockamock Players Community Theater, Odd Fellows, Swan's Island Lighthouse Committee, Garden Club, Swan's Island Electric Coop., and served as former president of the Swan's Island Fishermen's Cooperative. Rusty Crossman was a hard-working man best known for his love of nature, infectious sense of humor, quick wit and willingness to lend a hand in a time of need. He will be greatly missed by all whose life he touched.
Mr. Crossman is survived by his mother, Lillian (Davis) Lunt; two daughters, Tammy Crossman-Turner and Jennifer (Crossman) Sutherland; a son, Jon Crossman; three former stepchildren, Samantha Sawyer, Jake Betts and Carrie Betts; his sister, Barbara (Lunt) Sawyer; his brother, George Crossman; and his half sister, Mary Chase; 11 grandchildren; eight nieces and nephews, and one very special friend, Donna Wiegle. Rusty was predeceased by his sisters, Marilyn (Crossman) Chauvenne, Dottie Lewis and Harriet Harmon; and his father, Raymond Crossman.
Memorial services will be held aboard the Maine Sea Coast Mission boat, Sunbeam, and on land at the Swan's Island school on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005.
