PORTLAND - Walter L. Montague, 92, of Panoramic View Drive, Portland, formerly of Hawthorne Street, died Saturday, March 15, 2003 at his home following a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in King's County, Nova Scotia on Oct. 16, 1910, to Fred and Edith (Loomer) Montague.

He graduated from Greeley Institute in 1930. Walter was employed by the South Portland Shipyard and also drove tractor trailer for Texaco Inc. in South Portland for over 30 years. He was a member of North Deering Congregational Church, and Cornerstone Lodge of Masons.

Walter was predeceased by his first wife, Blanche Dennis Montague; and his second wife, Lurla Kent Gardner Montague. He is survived by his loving companion, Miriam Rand of Portland; his sister Esther Walker of North Yarmouth. He was the beloved father of Nancy and her husband Nathaniel Chambers of South Portland, Phyllis and her husband Robert Greenier of Alton Bay, N.H., Florence and her husband Sidney Tibbetts of South Portland, Laurence Montague of South Portland, Kent Gardner and his wife Helen of Swan's Island, Gary Montague and his companion Linda Jordan of Windham, Bethany Montague Williams of Portland, Marcia Montague and her companion Dale Beauchesne of Casco. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great- granddaughter.

Visiting hours will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, and where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Montague's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. Walter L.
