Barbara Irene Holmes, daughter of William Edward Holmes and Ruby Theo Stinson, was born on 16 January 1924 in Swan's Island, Hancock County, Maine, USA. She died Renal failure and sepsis on 23 August 2011 at the age of 87 in Blue Hill Hospital, Maine, USA. Barbara Irene (Holmes) Bridges, died on Monday, August, 23, 2011, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. She was born January 16, 1924, on Swanâ€™s Island, the daughter of William and Ruby (Stinson) Holmes. Married to Melvin C. Bridges in 1940, the couple raised their four children, Cynthia, Connie, Doreene, and Dick, in their Stonington home. The couple enjoyed many activities together, including dancing, having large holiday gatherings with family, and spending time at their summer cottage on Little Deer Isle.
The couple owned and operated Connieâ€™s Restaurant in Stonington for more than 25 years. However, her role as wife, mother and grandmother were always her priority.â€Gram,â€ as she was known to her 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren, was a source of strength and guidance for her many family members and friends. She had an open door and open ear for anyone who arrived on her doorstep. Giving to others was a hallmark of her life. She gave freely and often to anyone in need and the many causes she supported, including Race for the Cure and St. Judeâ€™s Hospital.
As a fantastic cook who passed on her talent in the kitchen to many of her children and grandchildren, Barbara enjoyed preparing big Sunday meals and holiday dinners for her family. She was also an avid sports fan, following her favorite teams from Deer Isle-Stonington to Boston, and taking great pride and interest in the sports and activities of her family.
Her many interests also included crocheting, knitting, word games, and keeping up with current events. She looked forward to her daily visits from her friend, Helen Pervear, as well as her regular visits from family and â€œthe girlsâ€(her friends from childhood, Helene Billings and Charlene Carter).
Barbara is survived by her children, Cynthia Bridges of Glenburn; Connie and Dick Taylor of Stonington; Dick and Carol Bridges, and Doreene and Jon Haskell of Deer Isle; as well her 39 grandchildren living many place between Deer Isle and Arizona. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Melvin; her brothers, Richard, Robert, Mahlon, and Donald Holmes, her sister, Luella Savage; and grandchildren, Kevin Trundy, Chris Trundy, and Joseph Brown.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Deer Isle, on Saturday, August 27th, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Memorial Ambulance Corp. She was buried on 27 August 2011 in Greenwood cemetery, Oceanville, Maine.
