Born on Vinalhaven, October 12, 1929, he was the son of Norman and Ruth Benner Thompson. He grew up on Matinicus and attended Rockland District High School. He joined the Navy in 1947, serving three years.

In 1951 he married Ada E. Anthony of Vinalhaven. He was a fisherman, carpenter and a long time ferry boat Captain for the Maine State Ferry Service.

He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, and three sisters, Hilda Flood, Eunice (Sis) Gamage, and Edith (Weed) Wilson. He is survived by his daughters, Than Hopkins and her husband Kevin of Vinalhaven, Faye Grant and her husband Miles of Machais, a son Frank E. and his wife Jean of Vinalhaven; seven grandchildren, Haven, Kevin E., Sarah, Shanna, Justin, Jacob and Murray; three sisters, Virginia Fogg, Barbara Davis, and Irene Warren; six great-grandchildren as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no funeral services at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
